•  Winner of The Crite Prize for my thesis, granted on the basis of academic achievement and dedication to learning and the arts.

WORK EXPERIENCE

1990 - present   NewLeaf Creative Principal, Amesbury, MA

•   Promotional pieces, identity programs, multimedia, advertising, editorial design, events production

—from concept to design, budgeting, strategy and/or prepress and production management.

•   Currently part-time publications designer at Harvard University Department of the Classics.

•   Printing experience from letterpress, intaglio, to digital printing, four color process and on demand.

•    Clients have included Harvard University, Cornell University, Princeton University, Mount Holyoke College, University of
Massachusetts, Williams College Museum of Art.

•   Research skills, including a semester-long project for Dr. Stephen Shoemaker, Harvard University.

 

2015 - 2020    Adjunct Art + Design Professor

•    Northern Vermont University DES3111 Print Production, methods related to print production from design to the finished product;
students gain experience in printing techniques in prepress, preflight of files, estimates, and preparation of files for production.
Attention given to graphic imaging.

•   Emerson College PB 691 Applications for Print Publishing, Writing, Publishing and literature Program, elective course for
graduate students in. Students in the class master page layout and imaging soft- ware used in the print publishing industry. Design
issues, software skills and book building.

•   Salem State University Art 303 Introduction to Electronic Media, introduces software for vector and bitmap image editing, page
layout and screen based media. Students are introduced to some of the basic design principles and technical processes used by
print and interactive designers, illustrators, and photographers. Exercises, lectures, and projects focus on understanding file formats,
the use of grids, typeface choices, color mode selection, and digital image rendering techniques.

 

2002 -2004    Design Management in Publishing

Princeton University Press, Princeton, NJ and Storey Publishing, North Adams, MA

•   Managed staff of nine designers, production artists and prepress department at Princeton University Press, as well as Storey
Publishing. Supervised the design and production of highly complicated academic and trade books, including four color children’s
books, picture books, how-to and craft books, as well as gardening, landscaping guides and gift items.

•   Streamlined production by implementing new procedures, software, archiving and prepress solutions. Scheduling and budgeting
projects.

•   Art directed a portion of list and managed all freelancers, photographers and illustrators, including the negotiation of their contracts.

•   Art directed fashion and food photography sessions.

 

1999 -2001    Design Management inTechnology

Adobe Systems, Inc. (previously Glassbook), Burlington, MA / San Jose, CA

•   Contributed to building a market for PDF eBooks, resulting in over a million downloads in one year of Acrobat eBook Reader;
Designed and produced all marketing collateral, both print and digital.

•   Directed design specifications, documented and delivered ten presentations for eBooks.

•   Designed new sample eBooks in InDesign and guided publishers using the application for eBooks.

•   Coordinated trade show events.

 

1990 - 1999 Book Designer for Harvard University Press, Cambridge, MA

•   Designed and art directed jackets and interiors for about 40 books a year, both trade and text.

•   Worked closely with editorial and marketing. Job required high productivity under deadline pressure, budgeting, managing
freelancers, art directing illustrators, and working as team.

•   New England Bookbuilders Award recipient every year 1990-1999

 

1998- 1999    Adjunct Professor at Emerson College, Boston, MA   Writing, Publishing  and  literature  Program

•   Two semesters in Desktop Publishing, exploring all aspects computer design and bookmaking.

 

1988- 1990    Art Director, Godine Publishing, Boston, MA

•   Book interior and jacket design for new trade publications, as well as reprints.

•   Catalog design and production for spring and fall lists.

•   Contract negotiations and handling of freelance design and illustration.

OTHER SKILLS & INTERESTS

•  Adept public speaker, presenting at numerous conferences and panel discussions.

•   Over 300 hours of mediation and conflict resolution with The Mediation Training & Collaborative working in four district court systems
as well as private mediation, employment, elder care, divorce and social service facilitation. Trainings and coaching for students.

•   Events production: Produced and promoted two theater events in Western Massachusetts as benefits for local non-profits.

•   Creative writing, resulting in published poems. Currently working on multi-media book.

•   Avocational D. J. and avid music listener. Jazz and Blues radio show a few years back and now listening to an eclectic Spotify
playlist from Art Blakey to Zuco 103.
